This approach can be particularly rewarding for those who want to maximize the visual impact and enjoyment of their gardens.

Below, you will find a list of some of the best things to grow.

Wonderful things to grow

Try these flower and plant seeds.

Limnanthes

Limnanthes - Flower & Plant Seeds to Grow in June – 2024 Sowing Guide

Alternatively known as the poached egg plant on account of its yellow and white leaves, this plant is a wonderful addition to any garden. Some species are used for oil, while others produce marshmallow flavoured honey.

For the best results, sow these seeds 1/8 inches deep in a place that attracts good light. Limnanthes do well in moist soil, though they can even grow in hard, clay soil.

As it grows, it emits a sweet fragrance that will attract bees and insects to your garden. This makes it a great companion for vegetable beds, as some of the insects it attracts will eat any aphids attacking your vegetables. It is ideal for borders, edges, and as ground cover, and it can grow relatively tall.

Nasturtiums

Nasturtiums - Flower & Plant Seeds to Grow in June – 2024 Sowing Guide

This multicoloured flowering plant is said to symbolically represent patriotism, while it is also used in herbal medicine because the leaves are edible. They have a pepper-like taste, and they can be added to any salad. Historically, it has caught the attention of ancient Roman soldiers and the acclaimed author J.R.R. Tolkien.

Nasturtiums thrive in well-drained soil, under full sun or in partial shade. However, this plant prefers poorer rather than fertile soils. This is because fertile soils promote the growth of foliage at the expense of flowers. Sow the seeds 0.5 inches deep, 10-12 inches apart, and add a small bit of fertilizer. In 7-10 days, plants should appear. Remember to water the seeds but not too much, and to cut off dead flowers in order to prolong blooming. In good conditions, they will reseed themselves.

Nasturtiums have a sweet fragrance, and that can attract insects. Caterpillars and slugs are common pests, so keep them at bay with traps or bio-controls.

Coreopsis

Poppies are colourful and symbolic flowers, known for their role in opium production and for being the flowers of remembrance for the fallen soldiers of World War 1. The field poppy, which is synonymous with the aforementioned Great War, is considered the easiest to grow.

Poppy seeds can be sown directly into the ground, especially in well-drained spots that attract a lot of sun, and they germinate in around 7-30 days. Once the seeds become big enough, set them 30 cm apart from one another. Water the seeds but remember that overwatering can lead to leggy plants. You should also deadhead any faded flowers in order to encourage more blooms.

By late summer, divide clumps of poppies after they have finished blooming, but be careful and try to avoid damaging the roots. As a wildflower, it will bring bees and insects to your garden.

In moist, well-drained soil, forget-me-nots grow well, especially if the seeds are placed in a sunny or shady spot and are mixed with compost. They pair well with other plants that like the shade, and they are easy to maintain because they are biennial self-seeders, though they need to be watered well.

Nigella is a reliable annual garden plant, one which will add colour to any garden as it blooms in blue, lavender, white, and pink. It is known by a few poetic names, such as ‘love-in-a-mist’, ‘ragged lady’ or ‘devil in the bush’.

Scatter nigella can grow almost anywhere, from seedbeds to gaps and cracks. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil, though it will tolerate partial shade, and it can grow 15-18 inches in height. You can use fertilizer when planting, and then once a month after the seeds have been sown. Water once or twice a week. Germination should happen in 7-14 days, and when leaves appear, thin seedlings so that they are 6-9 inches away from each other.

Sunflowers are easy to grow because they tolerate any kind of soil, as long as that soil is not waterlogged. Keep them away from potatoes, however, as they inhibit the growth of this vegetable. Thin plants to 2 feet apart after the first leaves emerge.
